Doggie Blog 5: Not the Best Guide Dog in the World as it Turns Out....

Poor Word Smith. She’s devastated. She’s been told today that I’m not well enough to go and live and train as a guide dog puppy. Neither me nor any of my siblings. We were taken from our mum today to the National Breeding Centre where a vet man looked at us and said ‘No, these puppies don’t make the grade’. So we’re going to live lives as pampered pets instead of trusty guides. Word Smith had put some hooks up for my lead and collar by the back door; she showed me the photo. And my bed will continue to lie unslept in for the foreseeable future.

The good news is that she’s just heard that Hamlet and Ivy have had some pups and the supervisor lady has allocated the Word Smith a golden Labrador/retriever, similar to me, and has given my erstwhile keeper a new delivery date of 20 February. So it’s not all bad news. At least that will give her time to do the painting she’s been meaning to do for the past 12 months, and have her hair cut, and donate some blood, and fix the new toilet seat, without me having to tag along, distracting her; as if she needs any excuses for that (I read her blog about being a distracted writer!). I know she’s feeling disappointed at the moment. My placement date has dragged since she was told about it only four weeks ago, so the next four weeks are going to be torture. I’m sure she can find things to keep her busy until then. Maybe she’ll even do some wordsmithing in the meantime!

But as for me, you’ll not hear from me again because I’ll be going off to live with my new owner and to start my lifelong job as a loyal family pet. I hope the new pup feels inclined to write about her intended new keeper. I have a feeling she might ... I think she’s got a lovely life awaiting her.

Paws crossed it all goes well for Hamlet and Ivy’s little golden girl.

Woofs from me. xx
